Geothermal Energy

Geothermal energy is energy that is produced by using the heat of the earth's interior. This can be used in a variety of ways but the most common is to use the heat to produce electricity. People have been using geothermal energy for quite a few years but it has only recently started to become widespread as a source of electricity. This is because of improvements in technology that make it possible to use temperatures that are fairly low. By using a liquid with a boiling point that is much lower than water it is possible to create steam at a fairly low temperatures, this steam can then spin a turbine and create electricity.

One of the huge advantages that geothermal energy offers over other sources of alternative energy is that it is reliable. Unlike solar power or wind power which can vary depending on conditions geothermal power is always available. This means that the plants that use it to produce electricity are much more reliable which eliminates one of the main problems that exist with most other forms of alternative energy. The result is that there is a lot of hope that geothermal energy can become a major power source in the future.

While geothermal energy has a lot of potential there are some issues that have to be dealt with in order to put it into widespread use. The first problem is that geothermal heat is not all that efficient; a lot of the heat gets wasted and is not turned into electricity. Since the heat is free this is not a huge deal except for the fact that it means that more plants have to be built to meet our energy needs. This raises the costs of construction significantly and as a result it currently does not usually make economic sense to build a geothermal plant.

The other big issue that geothermal power faces is that it is not the most environmentally friendly option. The main problem is that when you drill down to get to the source of heat greenhouse gases are released. Since global warming is a major concern this is a serious problem. In theory it is possible to capture the greenhouse gases but currently this does not happen. The other problem is that construction of the plants can have an impact on the stability of the land on which it is built. The biggest danger is that in some cases geothermal plants can cause earthquakes.

The reason that geothermal energy is becoming a popular option is that it is one of the few alternative fuel sources that offers the potential of actually meeting our energy needs. There is obviously a long way to go before this happens but the possibility does exist which makes a technology that is definitely worth pursuing.
