Biofuel

Biofuel is one of the alternative fuel sources that people are hoping will one day replace fossil fuels. While there is certainly potential for this to happen there are still quite a few issues that need to be overcome first. Work is progressing on this but there is still a long way to go.

Biofuel is simply a fuel source that gets its energy from biological sources of carbon. Of course fossil fuels also get their energy sources from biological carbon but they are not considered to be biofuels because of how long the carbon has been out of the lifecycle. There are all kinds of different biofuels available ranging from high tech additives to regular gas to the use of straight vegetable oil as a fuel source. While there is considerable potential for biofuel there are also some pretty serious issues that are going to have to be solved for it to enter widespread use.

Far and away the biggest challenge that biofuels face is the amount of land that is required to grow them. In order to meet our energy needs from biofuels it would require more than the total amount of farm land that currently exists. Obviously this is a major problem, especially in a world where many people are not able to get enough to eat as it is. In addition there is a danger that the desire to increase production could lead to large scale deforestation and soil erosion. There is also the issue of how the increased agricultural production will affect our water supplies.

The other big issue that biofuels face is that they are not all that good for the environment. By some reckoning they may actually produce more emissions than fossil fuels but this is in dispute. The issue is that once you factor in the pollution that occurs in growing and harvesting the crops it is quite significant. There is work being done to reduce the amount of emissions that are being released but the reality is that there will always be a problem in this regard.

While there are certainly some challenges that biofuel is going to have to overcome if it is going to be a major energy source there has been progress in this regard. First it is now clear that some biofuels are better than others. That means that we have to make sure that we focus on those sources and abandon the ones that are not as efficient. In addition a lot of work has been done to create crops that require less land and water in order for them to grow. There is also work being done to develop crops that can grow in areas where other crops would have hard time so that they can be grown on areas that are not normally used for producing foods.
